Hiya all, I am Peter Roche the Walking Kiwi and this Blog is my bucket list travels around New Zealand and adventures walking and cycling a few of the world’s iconic treks. Some of my favourites are highlighted below….the journeys continue.

This October I am planning to cycle New Zealand’s ultimate rail trail venture on a spectacular 650km loop linking Queenstown along the new Kawarau Gorge Trail, Roxburgh and Clutha Gold trails to Dunedin before returning on the Taieri Gorge Train and via the Otago Rail trail.

Adventure Trails

In 2016 I walked the rugged Larapinta Trail, a spectacular 221km outback trek in Australia’s Northern Territory. The trail traverses the ancient ridges of the West MacDonnell Ranges, running from Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the summit of Mount Sonder.

After completing this amazing solo trek, I drove the 1,600km to Adelaide, passing by the magnificent sandstone monolith of Uluru (Ayers Rock) along the way. Climbing Uluru is now permanently closed to protect the mountain’s spiritual significance, but it was still permitted at the time, so I made the climb to the top.


This May and June I was again in Europe and in the very south of Italy. I cycled 750km around the Puglia region starting in Bari and visiting the UNESCO towns of Matera and the conical “Trulli” houses of Alberobello. My meandering journey was across to Matera then around the heel of Italy travelling to Taranto, Gallipoli, Leuca, Otranto, Lecce, Brindisi, Ostuni and Monopoli before ending back to Bari…… Read More
